All in a day's job

Been in the surgical ward for 2 weeks now... what I note

1. Housemen are really working like dogs... Clerk patients, order/perform the necessary investigations, do this and that procedures, asist here and there, follow patients to other hospitals etc etc....and get bombarded by the consultants when the job is not satisfactory due to fatigue... oh not too mention, to get complains by the patients when the job is too slow.

2. Medical officers, surgeons and consultants are not much 'free'er either. In the morning 7.30am: ward round,10am to evening: operations/clinic work/performing scopes etc. 4pm: ward round again. 10pm: ward round again if on call. And since there are so few doctors, they are almost oncall every 3 days.

3. Not protected from sexual harrassment from outsiders (no difference female or male, it seems)

4. A&E is nothing like ER. No such adrenaline rush during an emergency. Moreover, not much serious emergencies. Anyway the bunch of doctors and MA at the A&E know how to amuse themselves when they are too bored.

5. Culture in the Operating Theatre is different than in the ward. The surgeons really are threated as 'orang kebesaran'. The nurses have to be familiar with what the surgeons want. HO must learn to answer a call on behalf of the surgeon in a correct manner. The anaesthetist dont really bother what is happening, one even brought in a 'Harry Potter' novel! But really admire their job.

Many more observations but need to get back to study. Many new experiences, many learning issues. Learning a lot of teamwork and...well...learning to be bold to poen my mouth to speak mandarin..haha.
